Oliver Herford (1863-1935) was known as both a poet and illustrator, as well as for his wit. Born in England, he moved with his family to the United States when he was six, but later attended schools in both countries, as well as in France. He had a long and outstanding career as a writer and illustrator for numerous magazines including "Life" and "Harper's Weekly." He also, between 1893 and 1931, wrote and illsutrated approximately fifty books of "artistic nonesense." In addition to the humor of his published works, "Herford's oral humor was remembered as often as his verse. In his heyday he was called 'the most quoted man in America'" (Kunitz & Haycraft).
