Wirgman (1848-1925), was born in Louvain, Belgium, and studied at England's Royal Academy Schools and in Paris before returning to London, where he worked as a painter, engraver, and portraitist. He was an associate of John Everett Millais; his portrait of Millais is in The National Portrait Gallery, London.
