This rare poetic broadside comes from an unusual American source: the poet of the Virgin Islands, José P. Gimenez, born on the Island of St. Thomas, (v. French, et. al., Afro-American Poetry & Drama 1760-1975, p. 106.) He published four books: Virgina Island Folklore, 1933; Caribbean Echoes, 1934; Deep Waters, 1939; and Voice of the Virgin Islands, 1952.
The poem, a 36-line elegy on the death of FDR, was unseen by French, and is clearly quite rare. In it, Gimenez (who signs himself ‘Virgin Islands Mystic Poet’) pays tribute to the memory of the recently deceased FDR. Unusual poetry from an unusual source.
