Item #12681

A splendid, vigorous painting, in varying tones of gray, black and white, on brown paper. It shows a group of six white-haired, uniformed, French veterans around a table in a tavern court yard, raising their tankards, and cursing those who brought them defeat at Waterloo. In the book, this early Frost illustration is reproduced by wood-engraving, which cannot compare with the spirit and panache of the original.

A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF FROST'S WORK IN GOUACHE.
