Fine A.B. Frost Original Gouache

FINE GOUACHE ILLUSTRATION OF FRENCH MILITARY VETERANS DRINKING IN A TAVERN COURTYARD, SIGNED.

New York: Scribner's, 1882.

A.B. Frost. An original illustration to Thackeray's The Chronicle of the Drum (1882), page 58, “Ho! fetch me a beaker of wine / And, comrades, I'll give you a toast.”. 1 vols. Image size 14 x 10 inches; matted and framed to 21 x 16 3/4 inches overall. Fine A.B. Frost Original Gouache. On paper mounted on canvas; two almost imperceptible nicks toward the bottom of the image, else fine. Item #12681

A splendid, vigorous painting, in varying tones of gray, black and white, on brown paper. It shows a group of six white-haired, uniformed, French veterans around a table in a tavern court yard, raising their tankards, and cursing those who brought them defeat at Waterloo. In the book, this early Frost illustration is reproduced by wood-engraving, which cannot compare with the spirit and panache of the original.

A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF FROST'S WORK IN GOUACHE.
