Beautiful watercolor with mythological content by Sir William Russell Flint (1880-1969) who was a member, and later president, of the Royal Academy; his exceptional draughtsmanship, coupled with a superb sense of color and highly imaginative powers of composition, made him one of the finest and most popular artists and illustrators of the twentieth century. This fine Flint drawing was used as the frontispiece for Charles Kingsley's The Heroes, or Greek Fairy Tales for My Children, the text of which is at p. 4: “Now it came to pass that in time Danae bore a son: so beautiful a babe that any but King Acrisius (Danae's father) would have pity on it. But he had no pity; for he took Danae and her babe (Perseus) down to the seashore, and put them into a great chest and thrust them out to sea, for the winds and the waves to carry them whithersoever they would”.
