Herman Melville was an American writer of short stories, poems, and novels during the period known as the American Renaissance. He is most noted for his books on sea-adventures primarily the novels Typee (1846), Omoo (1847), and Moby-Dick (1851). His works did not reach great popularity in the later years of his life, and his final novel, Billy Budd, Sailor, was left unfinished. Not until the 1920s did Melville's work become appreciated as one of the classics. Moby Dick is often cited as being the Great American Novel.
