Francois-Marie Arouet, known by his pseudonym Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment historian, philosopher, and writer. Voltaire was an outspoken advocate against the Catholic church and preached separation between church and state. He wrote in every literary form and produced two-thousand books and paphlets, and about twenty-thousand letters. His most notable works include Candide, The Age of Louis XIV, and his Essay on the Customs and the Spirit of the Nations.
