Gertrude Stein

1874 - 1946

Gertrude Stein was an American novelist, poet, and playwright. Known as a pioneer of Modernist literature, her works have been categorized in three groups: hermetic, popularized writing, and autobiographical writing. In 1933, Stein published The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, which was a memoir of her years in Paris written in the voice of her life partner. This book brought Stein's work to a greater level of popularity. In addition to Stein's fervent interest and work in the literary community she was a collector of Modernist art with her brother Leo Stein.
