Illustrated throughout by Lossing, Richardson, Anderson, Bellew and many other notable American illustrators, the fashion plates in each issue in black and white. 2 vols. 8vo, New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, September 1855-May 1856. Later red morocco gilt with name "M. Monell" on upper cover and bookplate of Maude M. Monell. Joints restored, some chipping to head of spine of one volume, some rubbing, browning of endpapers, erasures on titles else very good.

With illustrated contributions on numerous subjects, historical, editorial and literary including the first appearance in America by "Little Dorritt " appearing in the January 1856 issue a month after its first appearance in England. The February 1856 carries a short biography and portrait of Dickens to accompany the work (which is complete through chapter XVIII). There are two reports of Commodore Perry's visit to Japan, and a discussion of whaling and whale attacks, including reports of “Mocha Dick.” There is also an extended satiric sketch of life on January First, A.D. 3000, with fanciful illustrations of Paris in ruins, air travel by balloon, childrearing, and fashion
