Domenech, Emmanuel H

Seven Years' Residence in the Great Deserts of North America

xxiv, 445 ; xii ,465 pp. plus many lithographic plates (some tinted), and colored folding map. 2 vols. tall, 8vo, London: Longmans, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1860. First edition. Contemporary calf, rebacked; spine gilt, leather labels. Corners repaired, boards lightly scuffed. Bookplate on front pastedowns. End leaves lightly foxed, else quite clean internally. Good.

Although Domenech visited the Southwest, he has never been granted much credence as an observer.  The plates and maps are largely lifted from other sources, and the author has been criticized for his inaccuracy as an ethnologist.  Still, this is an interesting narrative of travels, including much material on the Indians of the region.  Wheat finds this map of interest for its marking of the Oregon Trail Wagner-Camp 356:1; Wheat Transmississippi 1008; Graff112; PILLING, PROOF-SHEETS 1061. Abbey 664; Howes D410; Clark III:305; Sabin 20554.
