"Your favor of Nov. 6 I have just rec'd. I regret very much that I have no autograph of the Emperor and have never had any. While in Europe I received some notes from distinguished men but they have long since passed into the hands of some of my friends who were interested in such collections. I have often regretted that I did not while in Europe, devote more time to the collection of such interesting memorials ... I thank you very much for your kind expressions of interest in the 'Life of Napoleon.'"
