Southern Literary Messenger. T. W. White, Editor and Proprietor. Vol. IV, Nov. 1838, No. XI

8vo, Richmond, Virginia: T. W. White, Printer, 1838. Original green printed wrappers. Spine defective, some tears and soiling of wrappers, number stamped on upper cover and notation "For the Postmaster" with the signature of John Rosser of Camden, S. C., newly stitched.

This issue of the "Southern Literary Messenger" published the year after Poe discontinued his contributions. Though apparently he and White had had an agreement that he would continue to write for the magazine, Poe's move to New York severed the tie. Contributors to this issue include Henry Thompson, James E. Heath, J. F. Otis and numerous anonymous works or ones signed with initials. There are articles on the Memory, a lecture on " the present condition of our country an its probable future destinies", the Potomac River, the Literature of Virginia, reviews on Cooper's "Homeward Bound" and original poetry
