Unrecorded Derrydale Press Printing
Invitation to an exhibition of sporting books by Ernest R. Gee
With oval wildfowling woodcut above text. One page, with conjugate blank, approximately 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. , [New York]: [The Derrydale Press], Ca. 1928. Fine condition. From the estate of Eugene V. Connett, III, proprietor of The Derrydale Press. An elegant little piece of letterpress on deckle-edge laid paper. The text reads: “You are invited to attend / an exhibition of / Early American Sporting Books / which will be held at / 35 East 49th Street / from January 18 to 28th / Ernest R. Gee”. This is surmounted by a Bewick-style woodcut of a gentleman in a landscape shooting at fowl over a waiting dog. As Siegel notes: “Ernest R. Gee did more than any other single individual to encourage and support Eugene Connett and the Derrydale Press”; this invitation probably dates to 1928, the year Connett published Gee's “Early American Sporting Books 1734-1844”. This unrecorded item came from Connett's estate in a folder containing other Derrydale Press ephemeral material only, and is in fine condition Siegel, pp. 23-4.
