In a career spanning more than fifty years, Hains began as an ensign in 1839. He served in India in 1845 (where he was severely wounded) and the Crimean War. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Madras army in 1871 and Commander-in-Chief of the Army in India in 1876. His promotion to Field Marshall was on 21 May, 1890.
