The letter reads in part: "I must again beg leave to trouble you on the subject of the unfortunate young men of my reg ... plunged into distress by the high price of every article in the West Indies, & after arriving in England, being marched from one end of the kingdom to the other, which their pay was by no means adequate to." He then pleads the special cases of Ens. Clune, Taylor and Green.

Charles Grey was successful and controversial in the war. Promoted to Major-General in 1777, under General Howe he commanded the 3rd Brigade at both Brandywine and Germantown. OBND states, "[A]fter his few years of service in America he earned a reputation as an efficient and loyal subordinate. He was also ranked as a hardline officer who advocated the fullest prosecution of the war." His ruthless reputation was established in actions near Paoli, Pa., then at New Beford, Martha's Vinyard and Old Tappan, NJ.
